  2. Step 2

Price preparation and finishing separately from materials.

Pricing, pitfalls and proof

  • How it is pricedPrice preparation and finishing per room, then paint as its own material line.
  • Common mistakeQuoting one coat on a colour change; the second coat then becomes an unpaid extra.
  • Keep as evidenceRecord the surface condition and the colours agreed before materials are ordered.

Questions about this template

Should paint be included in the price?

Either is fine if it is explicit. Including paint makes the total easier to compare; excluding it lets the client choose a brand but invites questions later.

How many coats should I quote?

State the coats rather than assuming. A colour change usually needs an extra coat, and that should appear as a line or a stated condition.

How do I price preparation?

Price it by room or by day depending on condition. Filling and sanding are the variable, so photographing the walls before quoting protects both sides.

Can I quote exterior work in the same document?

Yes, as long as weather-dependent timing and access equipment are stated separately from interior work.
